Traditionally, the malfunctioning veins used to be stripped off, a rather traumatic way of removing them from the venous system. This procedure requires general or regional anaesthetic, hospital stay and prolonged recovery.
Endovenous ablation is the technique of choice now. What we do is seal off the malfunctioning vein but leave it in-situ. There is no need to remove it so avoiding the trauma of stripping. Endovenous ablation is accomplished using either heat or by using chemicals.
Dr Sujit has vast experience in the management of varicose veins.
He received his medical degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He undertook postgraduate training at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and obtained his Masters in General Surgery also from NUS. Subsequently, Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was acquired. Dr Gill further honed his skills at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia. Having a passion to educate and train he has served extensively as a clinical mentor to medical students as well as regularly conducting forums to general practitioners and the public in Singapore, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia & Myanmar. Dr Sujit has also travelled to provide medical aid in the region in times of crisis.
Dr Sujit utilises the latest technologies and is innovative in his approach. He was one of the first surgeons in the region to introduce endovenous techniques for varicose veins including EVLT (endovenous laser therapy), EVRT (endovenous radiofrequency therapy) and Clarivein.
The first part of the consultation will be a conversation to determine what your problems are, how they are affecting your life and what your desired outcomes of treatment are. Also it is important to find out about other aspects of your health and lifestyle that may impact on treatment choices, risks and benefits.
A physical examination will then be undertaken. Dr Sujit will then perform a colour duplex ultrasound scan of both your legs. This scan will identify the underlying cause of your varicose veins i.e. whether you have any faulty valves in your legs.
Dr Sujit will exhaustively check all the veins in your legs to identify all possible underlying problems causing your varicose veins.
He will then discuss the results of the scan directly with you; explaining exactly what the problem is, what treatments you are suitable for and outline a proposed treatment plan. We encourage you to ask any questions you may have.
Your consultation is designed to fully inform you of the procedure that you are considering, and to discuss any other available options or considerations that may apply for your best outcomes.
As an expert vascular surgeon, Dr Sujit will not recommend, or undertake, any procedure if he is not completely confident it will achieve the results you would like, or if there is a clinical reason why it would not be appropriate for you.
Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and tortuous. The term commonly refers to the veins on the leg.
Varicose veins occur because blood flows down leg veins towards the feet, rather than away from the feet towards the heart. Normal veins have valves in them, which are structures that act as one-way doors permitting blood flow in 1 direction- that is towards the heart. When these valves malfunction, they permit blood to flow in both directions. This means there is more blood flowing to the feet than there should be. This then leads to the complications of varicose veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency.
Over time varicose veins enlarge and cause pain. In severe cases, varicose veins may cause skin damage and chronic ulcers.
Endovenous laser ablation takes, in experienced hands, about 20 minutes per leg.
You can get back to normal activities as soon as you leave the clinic. The only restriction is that you’ll be wearing a compression stocking on your leg. You should avoid exercise for a few days.
Insurance is claimable if the condition is deemed to be medically indicated. The presence of symptoms including pain, cramps and swollen legs can make a good case for coverage. If you are suitable, the clinic will provide you with a supporting letter to your insurance provider to make the relevant claims.
The consultation fee for the first visit ranges from $150 and above. The cost will depend on the type of procedure needed and financial counselling will be provided before any procedure is performed.
We understand you may be busy and want to minimise your waiting time in our clinic. As such we strongly encourage you to make a prior appointment with our staff either through call or email. We will then schedule a time for our vascular surgeon to meet you.
